VCTC Club Aid Station

(From Bette in 2009 but Posted by Kevin, from archive - little has changed).

As most of you know (but newer members may not), VCTC sets up a table
along the marathon course (about mile 21) in the Bronx to cheer on
our runners--and all the others!! In past years, the table has been
set up on 138th street, beneath the Grand Concourse overpass, just
before runners cross over the Madison Avenue bridge to reenter
Manhattan. We are set up on the south side of the street, to the
runners left side. We used to be able to set up on the center island,
beneath the overpass. which gave us great access to the runners, but
in recent years have been banished by the police to the sidewalk,
which keeps us further from the runners. We are in the process of
seeing whether we can get special permission from NYRR or the local
police to use our traditional spot; if not, we will either stay on
the sidewalk or move one block east to the Park avenue overpass,
which would give us protection from rain, good viewing, and less
hassle. In any even we will be easy to find at either location, if
you have never been there.

The easiest way to get there is to take the number 6 train to 138th
street. If driving, go as far south as you can on the Grand
Concourse, turn at 142nd, and then back down the side street towards
138th. We've generally been able to find parking around there. If you
want to see the fastest runners, get there by 11:00; some of our
runners will reach this spot anywhere from 1:00 to 3:00, so it can be
a long day--wear VCTC clothing (bring warm clothes) left over
Halloween candy (runners appreciate it at this point in the race),
something to sit on if you don't want to stand so long!! Generally we
make sure there are plenty of snacks (sandwiches, donuts, coffee,
water) for all of us onlookers. If you know you can help out in
someway (bringing food, water, etc.), please let us know. Dave and
Gary will be the point people this year and will bring tables, but
I'm sure would appreciate help with other things.

Thanks to Ken for outlining all these details. Hope many of you who
are not running can make it to our table. Our runners really look
forward to reaching the VCTC cheering crowd and it means a lot to
them at this point in the race to have all the encouragement they can
get!!!

I will let you know if we have any new news about our location

Hey folks, I'm running Philly this year, 2 weeks after New York.  Did NY last year and loved it (well, I loved at least the first 20 miles of it.)  Best of luck to all in training!  My 16 weeks officially start on Monday.

Yeah, I'm in!

Thanks, Paul. I am considering Philly for that weekend. Or I may take the weekend off and run the Thanksgiving Marathon in VCP.

Hey James, Philly fits perfectly in your schedule if you bypass the Knickerbocker.  I'm thinking A.C. for a double with Hartford the same weekend.

Hi marathoners,
I'm registered for the 2011 run, but fighting a nagging calf tear.
Should be back on the road in another 3 weeks or so.
If I can manage the mileage, this will be my 3rd NYC.
Kind of nervous about it - it's been 10 years since I've gone that distance.

Wow James, that is quite an undertaking. I'll be running my first marathon, the NYC in Nov.

I'm leaning toward the Knickerbocker 60K that weekend.  :)
