Rachel, I read born to run last year and it was awesome!!! and Mike, totally agree with the Pre book, not to mention the movie without limits. I watched it a couple nights before Regionals and PRed big time. Totally inspiring. The novel "The complete book of running" has some funny chapters in it as well.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who read and enjoyed the NYTimes Business section article by Amy Cortese on Sunday that discussed the growing wave of runners who are starting to rebel against the big shoe company's 30+ year campaign to saddle the public with big butt-heel shoes that screw up the natural running dynamics. Article discussed Vibram and Terra Plana along with Nike Free. Of course the shoe companies push the results of a solitary study that stated the standard zillion layer shoes can reduce the shock of impact and may correct unwanted rotation of leg bones, which misses the point on so many levels since big heel and worn-down shoes are a major contributor to bad running form, misdirected muscle usage, high stress areas, and do not have adequate customer support to be billing themselves as a general medically based corrector for structural problems for their mass running audience. Sounds though like a number of running shoe companies like Nike are beginning to at least take notice of the "shoe that fits like a glove" movement.

On a similar note, went to Westchester Roadrunner to get my daughter shoed for XC and see if I could get another pair of the low-rider Puma Prompt togs I've run in for three years. Of course they've been discontinued and there's nothing to get except those usual platform shoes for runners. Fortunately XC spikes are all flat, and Sarah was able to pick up the latest version of the Nike Waffle so she'll be running on tip toes..

Pre: The Story of America's Greatest Running Legend, Steve Prefontaine
I loved this book, highly recommend it if you like reading about this very commanding athlete...it shows why he became so highly regarded. His speed was great, but his 'guts' and work ethic is ledgendary...

I'm about halfway through Born to Run - and I know i've seen the book passed around the track for the last 2 weeks - so lets discuss!
