Comment by Hiroshi Kitada on March 1, 2012 at 3:07pm Hey guys, join me in a fabulous opportunity to support Van Cortlandt Park as a Runner Patrols. I have teamed up with the Parks department to pilot this Saturday 3/10th. I only need 4 - 5 runners to join me becoming "Eyes and Ears" to pay attention to the following and report to the Parks dept.
As a Runner Patrols, you will:
1. Focus on the parade ground and any of the cross country trails that go through the park, including the Vault Hill section.
2. Look for; illegal dumping (large amounts of garbage dumped in the woods), bags of garbage on the trails, areas that have a lot of littler in general, graffiti (typically on rocks and/or trees), large trees or limbs that may have fallen on the trails, any act of vandalism (uprooted/damaged trees or anything out of the ordinary), any shady activity you may see from other patrons (such as drinking, acts of vandalism, illegal drug use, etc) and any homeless you may see.
3. Anything in point 2 can be reported to Parks. Exceptions are around the Vault Hill section, that the trails have a lot of run off and sections that may have large holes in them. The Parks already knows about these conditions (it's one of the things we would help with in the spring).
4. Do NOT go off the trails and venture into the woods to find conditions mentioned in point 2. In fact, this should be only what people notice while running on the trails, to avoid volunteers from getting hurt. Also, it's best to avoid much interaction with patrons you may think are breaking the Parks rules. It's best to report it to us and we can have PD or my staff respond when appropriate.
