How Do I Join?

Congratulations!

So you’ve decided to take the plunge and join VCTC.  You’re going to be glad you did.  We have 2 levels of membership, Single and Family.  Single is for one person and costs $50 for the first year.  Family membership costs $60 and covers multiple family members at the same address.  Room mates sharing an apartment must each have Single Membership.  The first year fee includes one club singlet and future years will be $15 less.  Membership runs until Dec 31st, but if joining after Sep 1st then it runs through to the Dec 31st of the following year since you will have missed most of the free stuff like the summer barbecue.

We’ve tried to make this easy.  Under the main tab that brought you to this page click on the “Membership Application” drop down tab.  This takes you to the Application Form for you to print off and fill in.  Then either:

a)      Mail it with a check for $50 for Family to VCTC, PO Box 341, Bronx, NY, 10471, or

b)      Bring it with a check to any club event, or

c)       Pay using PayPal BE CAREFUL to select the New Single or Family Membership, not Renewals, but we still need the Application Form as in a) or b) above.

What happens Next?

VCTC Yahoo Groups.  Kevin will soon see that you have joined and, if you have included an email address, he will send you an invite to join VCTC Yahoo Group.  This will make sure you get all the latest emails about what’s going on plus comments about all sorts of things related to the Club and running.  In Yahoo Groups you can provide one or more email addresses for emails to go to; they don’t have to be the one you put on the form (although that is where the invite will go).  You can change the addresses later if you want to and if you don’t want emails arriving all the time you can have the emails grouped so you get them all once a day or you can cancel.  If you reply or write to VCTC@yahoogroups.com everyone in the Club in the group will get it without you needing to list dozens of emails in your contacts list.

VCTC Online Member Page.  Why not go the Member Page on the VCTC website and complete your profile and tell us all about yourself.  Stick up some photos so we know what you look like – that really helps folk get to know you.  If you’ve any great running related videos you can stick them up too.  How about posting a Blog or saying “Hi” to people.

Your PRs.  We like to know all about your past Personal Records.  Go to the Member PRs sub-tab to see the distances we focus on (almost all distances from 800m to 100 miles+.  We want to know how well you do in future races so we can congratulate you when you do well, as well as respecting times achieved in the past, regardless of whether you were super-fast.  Remember this personal and you’ll see from everyone else’s PRs that we love everyone, not just the HS Jocks.  Send your PRs to Kevin at ksheltonsmith@msn.com and that includes any you achieve later on.  We can look at NYRR results but checking others is tricky.

Register Yourself with NYRR as VCTC.  If you intend racing, and note that many don’t, and that’s ok, but if you do you may run New York Road Runners races.  Joining NYRR gets you a discount in all their races but remember to register (or change) your club as VCTC.  This lets us find all the VCTC results together easily and means your results score points for the Club.

Race Results.  OK, we’re getting ahead of ourselves here but while on the topic I need to tell you to send all your FUTURE race results to Peter Coy at petercoy@verizon.net or to his address given in the Newsletters.  He copies them with those of everyone else in the Newsletters.  No need to send NYRR results since he will find those, if you are registered with them for VCTC (as mentioned above).

Singlet and Gear.  Now to what you really want to know.  Dave Isaac is in charge of Club Gear and is usually at events with gear on hand, so just let him know you need your singlet.  He’ll also have VCTC jackets, socks, T-shirts, hoodies and maybe even kit bags too, so bring your check book or cash if you want more.  By the time you read this we may even have set up payments online through PayPal.  Take a look.  If Dave isn’t around, Bette usually has some stock in her car too, and Kevin will have some in his apartment nearby he can fetch.

Newsletter.  Dave King and Norris Ogard produce the Newsletter every couple of months and this will be mailed to you.  They are always interested in new stories and race reports so feel free to send some in.  Typically less than 600 words is best, plus a photo.

Any Questions?  If there is anything more you’d like to know email Kevin ksheltonsmith@msn.com or anyone else for answers.  Email addresses are on the website for directors and most other people so don’t hesitate to ask, or ask anyone at the events.

And we really look forward to seeing you!

Not sure yet?

Fair enough, perhaps you don’t know us are a tad shy about starting out running with people you may think are so fit that you won’t fit in.  Don’t worry, most of us started out that way and you don’t have to get fit before approaching us.  We’ll help you get there.  So why not come along and try us out to see if you might like us before you commit.  Or just join us for breakfast and a chat (or look at us from a distance till you feel comfortable enough to step forward.  Just say, ‘Hello, I’m thinking about VCTC and wanted to meet you first.  My name is ...’ and you’ll be made immediately welcome.
