My little brother started training for road races with my dad when he was in 2nd grade and I was in 5th. Eventually they convinced me to join them. Soon after I joined the city kids' track team (the Gainesville Striders) and continued to run through high school and college.

I loved running the 3000 on the indoor track in college... perfect distance.

When my college team won the South Conference by one point in 2003. I'd been out with a stress fracture most of the season so had done most of my training in the pool. Even though my time was far from my best it felt like all those lonely hours in the pool paid off.
