Bird of prey

   As I was working out on the running path along the Bronx River Parkway in Crestwood this afternoon, a falcon swooped 30 feet in front of me, 15 feet off the ground, landing in a wooded area about 5 yards to me left. It(I couldn't peak under the fur to see if it was male or female) was about 24 inches tall, had a wingspan of about 5 feet, a beautiful brown patterned coat with a cream colored belly and some sort of critter in its talons. Totten Trot 5K, Bayside Queens

   Sunday, October 30th, four VCTC members ran the Totten Trot 5k, a local race in Queens, N.Y.  It was a cold, sunny and windy day. Andie Davis, Jill Staats, Vera King and I had expected the race to be cancelled because of the freak snowstorm the day before, but the course, which ran along the southern tier of the Long Island Sound, was surprisingly clear.   The race started half hour later than scheduled because of difficult traveling conditions getting to Queens. How did you get into running?
I wanted to stay on varsity schedule as a sophomore in high school, so i joined the x-country team. I also had a good friend on the team, who encouraged my to join.
Year's you've been running?
44 with a couple years off in between.
What's your favorite race(s)?
It used to be the 440, then the 5K. Now I'm not sure because they all hurt in different ways.
Most memorable performance(s) and why?
My fastest 10K(31:33) where I was 2nd OV in a NYRR race.
Anchoring a mile relay at Penn where I got the stick in 5th and won the race, beating U of Virginia, U of Maryland, Temple, Howard among others.
My X-Country PR 5k(15:06) in 1981 in which I was absolutely flying up and down the backhills, and won the race by nearly 4 minutes.
Running hero's?
In high school it was Jim Ryun.
College it was Pre.
Afterwards Carl Lewis.
Lately-Kara Goucher.
Why do you run?
I'm addicted physically. It is part of my life. I love it.
What do you consider yourself, The Tortoise, or The Hare?
I am for sure the Hare
Future goals?
To try to stay injury/old age -free.
Any last words? Suggestions to the club admin?
Get someone else to do the Ramble.
