Profile Information

Are you a current paid-up member of VCTC?
Yes & I'm all paid up!
How Long have you been a VCTC member, not counting just the website?
Since the first VCTC Summer Series race '09 -- May 21.
Where are you from originally?
Newburyport, MA
Where do you live now?
Dobbs Ferry, NY
Relationship Status?
Married
Do you have any children?
2 - both runners. Dave (as in David King the younger) is 19 and was the reason I got back into running after 25 years; he is a sophomore at Harvey Mudd College out in Pomona, CA. Sarah is 16 and finished 9th at the NY State XC championship meet at Plattsburgh last November as a freshman running for her Dobbs Ferry HS team and has twice been part of the Section 1 team that won the state Class C championship.
What's your favorite running shoe?
Nike Waffles from 1974 (blue and yellow ones) -- just don't know where I can get them. 11ish.
What do you do? What's your profession, what do you do all day?
Quality Assurance Manager for the Wiley InterScience journals and books online library. Test things, in between breaking for runs from Hoboken up to Union City.
Hobbies?
Gardening, kayaking, and filming and writing about HS races.
Pet Peeve?
Crackberry zombies wandering the streets of NYC
Running PR's List them Here from 100meters to 100miles!
From 50-years-old and up ---
800m -- 2:33.5
1500m -- 5:04
1 mile -- 5:21
3000m -- 10:54.5
5K -- 18:30
3.5M -- 21:58
5M -- 31:41
10K -- 40:33
10M -- 1:06:46
13.1M -- 1:29:37
How did you get into running?
Took my then 15-year-old son out running to get him interested in the XC team and eventually got rehooked. Then fell in with a bunch of oldish coots (known loosely as the Under-a-Cheevers for our leader Ben Cheever) who run and talk mischief at Rockefeller Park in Sleepy Hollow on weekends.
Year's you've been running?
Fourth year following 2 1/2 decades hiatus after college.
What's your favorite race(s)?
Dobbs Ferry 5K Labor Day race because of the hometown crowd.
Most memorable performance(s) and why?
Running up Bowdoin Hill in Wappingers Falls four times to film the HS XC races, because it was for the kids.
Running hero's?
Dave Wottle and Lasse Viren, and the 66-year-old woman who popped a 101.6 AG score at the '09 Hope and Possibility 5M.
Why do you run?
For the challenges, the endorphins, and the thrill of it all..
What do you consider yourself, The Tortoise, or The Hare?
I don't like labels!
Future goals?
Running a wide variety of races on the road and track that don't go beyond 10 miles, the boundary at which all folly starts. Okay, nix that, just got confirmed as an Achilles Guide for this year's NYC Marathon, and there's really nothing better than a 26.2 mile run.
Any last words? Suggestions to the club admin?
Keep getting the carrot muffins hot out of the oven, and don't bother trying to convince Kevin not to run through those obstructing temporary lakes during the VCTC 5Ks..

Coogan's 5K Race Comments

On a day of perfect weather, decent though subdued live music compared to previous years, record turnouts from the VCTC and my own small village, and green bagels that apparently did not kill anyone, there was lots to love at the 5K race from the Armory and around the Cloisters and Fort Tryon and back. If you can remember that there is more than one hill (personally, some of us didn't) you can run a seriously fast 5K on a nice course. Lot of elbow banging on a tight course, but it's good early… Continue

NYC Marathon Report: Running with Juan

Guiding a Brave Runner to the Finish at NYC Marathon

(First posted on Dobbs Ferry Track site, with some additions for VCTC)

I got a chance to experience the NYC Marathon for the first time in a great way by serving as an Achilles Track Club guide to a Colombian soldier, Juan de Jesus Loaiza Delgado, who as a landmine victim was running on 2/3 of a right leg, and he had only 7 full fingers. What he did have though was a huge amount of courage and determination during… Continue

Newburyport 5K/10M: A Newbie Goes Home Again

Yankee Homecoming Week in the old-maritime-port-turned-chic-resort-town of Newburyport, MA is a fun time. Summer vacationers and locals from many small towns of northeastern MA and southeastern NH flock to this beach town filled with 300 year old houses to revel in such quaint pastimes as the Yankee craft festival and street fair exhibitions, kids' doll carriage and bike parades, best smile and cutest baby contests, bed races, and jazz sessions from young bands on the waterfront. In addition,… Continue
