how can we rally 5k troops?

Spartathlon – Running in the Footsteps of Pheidippides

I’ve just opened a book about something I’ve done. Three weeks have passed since the event. My wife gave me the book months before I had decided to run it. We both thought the book, “Why We Run,” was about something else. The coincidence is remarkable. It’s a true story. The book would have been a good insight into the adventure. It describes an ordeal. Maybe it was a good thing I hadn’t read it any sooner. The topic was one man’s year long preparation and ultimate failure. The book…

Race Results / PRs

Peter and Kevin,

Race results and PRs to report.  My sons and I ran the York (Maine) Turkey Trot 5K today.  I was pacing my seven year old, so nothing to report for me.  However, both of them recorded new PRs.  Lucas, age 11, ran 24:55 (4th in the 12 and under age group), lowering his PR from 27:23.  Isaac, age 7, lowered his PR from 34:30 to 28:56.

Bird of prey

As I was working out on the running path along the Bronx River Parkway in Crestwood this afternoon, a falcon swooped 30 feet in front of me, 15 feet off the ground, landing in a wooded area about 5 yards to me left. It(I couldn't peak under the fur to see if it was male or female) was about 24 inches tall, had a wingspan of about 5 feet, a beautiful brown patterned coat with a cream colored belly and some sort of critter in its talons. I left it to its dinner.

   I reached my…

How to cancel ING Marathon 2011? Sapeta

Hello everyone. Kenn Sapeta and Cathy Schwarz have to cancel the ING running since Kenn had an injury this week and I am the caretaker. Who do I call to cancel the ING marathon entry? My phone number is area code nine one four - three six four - 6242 if someone can call me to help me.

I am in an opera today and cannot get to Javitz.

Happy and healthy running to everyone. May you do your personal best.

Totten Trot 5K, Bayside Queens

Sunday, October 30th, four VCTC members ran the Totten Trot 5k, a local race in Queens, N.Y.  It was a cold, sunny and windy day. Andie Davis, Jill Staats, Vera King and I had expected the race to be cancelled because of the freak snowstorm the day before, but the course, which ran along the southern tier of the Long Island Sound, was surprisingly clear.

The race started half hour later than scheduled because of difficult traveling conditions getting to Queens. The first 300…

Reflections: U.S. Air Force Marathon, 9/17/11, Dayton, OH

I’m a rookie. This was my second marathon. My first was the Hamptons last year and I finished in 4:15. BQ was my goal this go-around. I started training in early May, maxing out at 60 miles per week. I did a combination of Hal Higdon’s Advanced II and Runner’s World plans, which included fairly intense speed work, hills, and strength training. I completed eight NYRR races. In addition, I watched several YouTube vids of elite athletes’ training and picked up a few pointers from that,…

Yonkers Half, 9/18.

Hey VCTC, is anyone here running the Yonkers Half-Marathon on Sept. 18th?  I'm thinking of running it, especially since the Bronx Half was canceled.  The course seems challenging, but in a good way.

Run for the Parks Race Report

I'm not a big fan of the New York Road Runners races in Central Park.  Don't get me wrong--they do a fine job.  It's just that the races are SO CROWDED!  That said, I have to confess I thoroughly enjoyed today's City Parks Foundation Run for the Parks 4-miler.

As of yesterday morning, I had no plans to run this race.  I had planned on running the… Continue

Coogan's 2011

Ran Coogan's yesterday with my son. My son and I do spend a lot of time together, at wrestling meets, tournaments, and practices. I try to get him pumped up when his team is losing, or when he has an important match. I don't know if all my 'coach talk' gets him psyched or not, but I know that when he runs with me, it gets me psyched. I had so much fun with him yesterday.

We started the race together, weaving in and out of people. Just when I though I'd lost him, I'd glance to…

Race Report: 10 x 5 x 200 Relay at the Armory

After two months of prodding VCTC members to try their skills at getting out of the cold and running indoors at the Armory Track, I managed to convince 9 others to join me for an insane 10 x 5 x 200 relay - the closing event of the NYRR Thursday Night at the Races series.

This event has been run before by VCTC members but according to Ken, this was the first time in many years we had a full 10-man VCTC team. This was exciting. Our team consisted of myself, Ken, Kevin…

Newer than a Newbie

I just started running early this year, and this business is tasking...You could say I don't like to sweat that is why I have never attempted to run until now. I found out that clears my head and basically kept me sane all throughout the stress I have had this year :-) Now, I go to a gym around the area and I TRIED to run for longer durations BUT I just can't run continuously. It is frustrating! When i first started, it took me 3 weeks before I could find my rhythm. I did a lot of quads and…
