Is it beneficial to have a gym membership?

Does anyone think it is/is not beneficial to have a gym membership? I have heard several people say yes and some say no.

I'm just not sure if I should consider getting one...

Any thoughts?

Rebecca, I go to the Riverdale Y as we get 20% (I think, but at least 10%) discount and Lisa in charge is a VCTC member. I try to go to abs class twice a week but often can't. At about $500/year that's $10 per week so the classes are cheap. I don't use the pool or equipment much but I should - I'm just too busy. From a running point of view strength and core stability and stretching are very important. Having membership and not going is a waste, but otherwise I would say do it.

Hard to say about "beneficial", but at least it's almost certainly not "detrimental" (except for the cost) ... :)

I guess if I didn't have access to a gym through work, I would probably opt for a membership. If nothing else, it gives the treadmill option. Sure it's boring and most of us would rather run outside, even in the freezing cold winter, but you can still get in a perfectly good workout on the treadmill, and sometimes it really is just that cold and I don't want to deal with it. I think it's also good to once in a while have at least the choice of something other than running: biking, swimming, weights ...

The reasons I've considered (but not given in to) for getting an outside gym membership would be for a pool and the option for some classes.
