The Riverdale Ramble, June 1, 2003, 10 AM
John F. Kennedy High School, Bronx, New York
Over 300 runners came out for the Ramble and Fun Run despite the heavy rain. The Van Cortlandt Track Club was equally unperturbed, as this was the 25th time they had put on this race. Despite the awful weather forcast with spot flooding on the course, the club was able to put on a great race. The cool, wet weather turned out to be a blessing, as the brutal hills of Palisade Avenue didn't seem so steep, and the 10 kilometers didn't feel like the usual 20 kilometers, as many past runners have claimed. Our winners were York Munoz of Jackson Heights and Megan Manfred of Tarrytown. York was able to pull off an incredible 35:17, and Megan was able to keep her pace a hair above 7 minutes / mile, clocking in at 44 minutes even. At the conclusion of the race, runners enjoyed the usual selection of oranges, bananas, Bagel Corner Bagels, and Stonyfield Farm Yogurt. Everyone left the race, happy that they fought the urge to stay in bed late, as most would do on a cool, rainy Sunday morning, and went home, knowing that they were able to run New York City's most challenging road race under ideal conditions. |
The race begins on 230th Street, before it turns for the hills of Riverdale |

Our winners, high school student Megan
Manfred and Jackson Heights resident York Munoz. |
Much of the course is on wooded and hilly Palisade Avenue. Except for the occasional house, most of the road runs through parkland. |
York Munoz takes a sizable lead by mile 3.Walter Dupont is still within striking distance, but the gap would only grow in the final miles. |
